Step 5: You will notice that the surface you are working on is getting smoother and smoother as the tool tip roughs out. You can feel the heat as you work on the surface. This is normal. Just don’t touch the hot tip as it is metal. You will find the wood cools down much faster, of course. And no, there is no chance it will catch on fire!
Step 6: Try to work towards creating three shapes in the same piece of wood.
- A simple square or rectangular shallow cutout. This will give you experience at maintaining a single depth cutout in the wood as well as creating some straight lines and right angles.
- A deeper hemisphere. You may find changing to a spherical burr makes this much easier. This gives you experience in creating and even surface with variable depth in the wood.
- Next Level – Create the Numbers 0 to 9 and letters A to Z in the wood. Try to make them them of different sizes. This is an excellent exercise as it will give you experience using the tool over a longer period, just like a professional. And you will need to change direction, angle, depth and speed to get the job done. Perhaps you can do it all with one tooltip? Always good to master one tip first instead of just jumping in and trying to master them all at once. There is plenty of time for that. Note: You may like to pause regularly to let the tool and piece cool off. Plus give your hand a rest while to inspect your progress.
Step 7: Next you can use this tool to polish your new wood carving. Pick on of the shapes, numbers or letters you created in Step 6, apply one of the finer polishing tool tips and start getting a feel for how the polisher works. Typically when doing this polishing work we start with a lower grade and work our way up to a finer grade tip for a finer finish. This really depends on the range of tips you have right now and how much effort you want to put into polishing practice.
